Assassin's Creed Valhalla - changing mounts, ravens and wolf mount explained

Publish date: 2022-05-23

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is yet another entry in the series allowing you to change your mount.

Previous entries paved way for all kinds of mythical creatures you could ride, including the likes of unicorns, and Valhalla takes this one step further with a wolf mount you can ride across ancient Norway and beyond.

One of the most popular options you might have seen on social media and YouTube is the wolf mount, an option not included in the base game. Provided you have access to it, though, you can start riding within a handful of hours.

As well as how to unlock the wolf mount, this page explains how to change your mount and change your raven.

How to change mount and raven in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

To change mount in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, you need to play the game until you form the settlement of Ravensthorpe in England as part of the main story.

This happens around four hours in to the game - depending on how much side content you do in Norway - and around 30 minutes after you first set foot in the new country.

When you arrive, you are promptly introduced to the settlement upgrade system. The ability to change mount belongs to one of these properties - specifically the stable and avery, which is among the first sets of building upgrades you have access to.

You can find the stable and avery by going up the main path from the dock, and just past the longhouse. You need to spend 400 supplies and 30 raw materials to unlock it.

This allows you to do a number of options related to mounts and your raven - including the ability to select between unique skins you have unlocked or purchased.

The new DLC is here - and we explain how to start The Siege of Paris, as well as new romance options and Treasure Hoard locations. If you're after end game activities in the full game, we can explain how to get Nodens' Arc, Excalibur, Thor gear and other Valhalla armour sets, Power Level and how to get XP fast, Order of the Ancients locations and all Assassin's Creed Valhalla story choices. If you're looking for things to collect and upgrade, we have lists on best skills and Book of Knowledge locations.

How to unlock the Hati Wolf mount in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

The Hati Wolf mount is one of the most exciting options in the game - moving away from a traditional steed to something all the more mythical.

To unlock the wolf mount at launch, you need to have either the Berserker Gear Pack - which comes with the Collector's Edition and Ultimate Editions of the game - to have purchased the wolf mount from the in-game store.

The in-game store can be accessed either from the main menu, or from your inventory, pressing Right on the D-Pad, then going to Companions.

It's also possible it could be available through in-game means by Ravensthorpe's Opal merchant, who sets up shop in your settlement early on after reaching England. As Tom Phillips in our explainer on cosmetics explains, "these daily and weekly quests (which mostly involve going somewhere to kill something) drop Opals, the new currency replacing Odyssey's Orichalcum that is also found sparingly dotted around the open world. Opals can then be exchanged for specific cosmetic items as they rotate in and out of the merchant's stock."

Provided you have one of the above, pay the stable a visit once you have unlocked it. The Hati Wolf mount will then be one of the options already available to choose from.

Aside from howling when you aren't near, it controls and behaves much the same as any other mount does in the game - so don't expect any special benefits for your purchase. Even still - we're sure the local townsfolk you ride past are terrified all the same.
