EA ends 32-bit support for The Sims 4 but promises a Legacy Edition will release later this year

Publish date: 2022-07-24

Electronic Arts has announced it is ending support for The Sims 4 on "non-metal Mac OS machines and PC 32-bit operating systems" from June 2019, but anyone affected by the changes and cannot upgrade will have a copy of The Sims 4: Legacy Edition "made available" to them.

"Apple has announced plans to phase out support for graphics processing technology called OpenGL and will be moving to a new technology known as Metal. Due to this change, we will upgrade The Sims 4 to work with Metal," wrote community manager, EA_Mai (thanks, PC Gamer). "For those that cannot upgrade to a Metal supporting OS, The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will be made available to you.

"This update will also retire support for 32-bit Operating Systems," they add. "We regularly evaluate our technologies, and to continue growing, improving, and optimizing the game, we have made the decision to retire 32-bit support."

The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will be available from June 2019 and if you are an existing The Sims 4 owner, EA will offer a guide on how to obtain a copy of The Sims 4: Legacy Edition when it is released, as well as how to transfer your save game files.

The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will not be made available to new players, nor will it receive any further content or, interestingly, bug fixes. "The Gallery, game banners, and social integrations" will also be disabled, and The Sims 4: Legacy Edition will not display or allow any purchases of content released after February 2019.
