Fortnite melee weapons explained: What's classed as a melee weapon in Fortnite?

Melee weapons in Fortnite allow you to attack your foes without having to worry about ammunition.

You can also use them to gather resources, like wood, to help build structures on the Fortnite map.

In Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8, you'll need to use a melee weapon to complete a number of the quest punchcard challenges, so you can gather Battle Pass XP.

What is a melee weapon in Fortnite?

There are now two melee weapons in Fortnite - your harvesting tool, also known as the pickaxe, and the Sideways Scythe, which is classified as a Sideways Weapon.

The easiest melee weapon to use is, of course, your harvesting tool, because you automatically start every match with this weapon. Simply select your favourite from your Locker and away you go!

If, however, you want to wield the impressive Sideways Scythe, then you need to head into the Sideways and open the chests hidden within this alternative dimension. Like the other Sideways Weapon, whether you receive the Sideways Scythe from the chests you open is decided randomly, so you may need to open a number of chests to find it.

Once you do, however, you'll discover that the Sideways Scythe is quite a powerful weapon, with a cool jump attack which allows you to travel short distances. It can even be upgraded using Cube Monster parts.

You can use your melee weapon to complete a number of quests for the punchcards this season; including 'Damage wildlife with a melee weapon' and 'Eliminate Cube Monsters in The Sideways with a melee weapon' from Dire's questline.

To complete these quests you simply need to use your melee weapon on whichever object it specifies - i.e. wildlife.
