Here's how Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings' lantern item works

Publish date: 2023-04-24

Ubisoft has now released Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings, a free and meaty add-on that introduces a new location and a couple of new items.

But one of those items - the new lantern gadget - is a little tricky to get used to, so we thought it would be useful to explain how it works.

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD.

You pick up the lantern during the DLC's first main story mission while underground in a network of crumbling caves and tunnels. You're also introduced to the game's new oil pots, which become selectable whenever your lamp could do with a top-up.

Here, the lantern stays lit and hangs on main character Arno's belt whenever needed, and you should have no problem solving the puzzles that immediately require its use (light a couple of braziers and a door opens - it's all very Zelda).

It's only after returning underground in later chapters (and perhaps a while later, due to the amount of open-world content Ubisoft has again thrown at the map to distract you) that you're required to use the lantern again.

It's at this point you need to manually select it to bring it out, using a button only stated right at the very earliest point you picked up the lamp (and at that point not actually needed).

The button is L3 - clicking in the left stick - but also holding it down for a few seconds.

L3 is already used in the game (to reload your pistol or rifle) so this double use can be confusing. But press L3 down for a couple of seconds and your lamp will return.

It's easy to miss the button prompt when it originally flashes up, and due to the fact oil urns aren't selectable when the lantern is automatically refilled at the start of the next story mission, it can appear like you're out of oil and simply unable to get a refill.

This can be particularly confusing if you only come back to the story a while later, armed only with the memory of the lamp being out for the duration of the last mission, when no button prompts were needed.
