PlayStation 4 doesn't support 3D Blu-rays

Publish date: 2022-03-24

UPDATE 2: A Sony spokesperson issued Eurogamer the following statement:

"Technically, the PS4 system supports 3D gameplay at launch on day one, though no launch titles are currently 3D compatible. 3D Blu-ray movies will not be compatible at launch."

UPDATE 1: Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said the PS4 does not support 3D Blu-rays - at launch.

He was asked about it on Twitter. His response: "not at launch, sorry."

This suggests 3D Blu-ray playback will be possible on PS4 should a future system update be released.

ORIGINAL STORY: PlayStation 4 does not play 3D Blu-rays, the system's online user guide has revealed.

The document confirms that 3D Blu-rays and some re-writable 2D Blu-ray discs will not be supported by the console, Sixth Axis spotted.

The lack of 3D movie support at launch is especially odd as Sony has previously been an advocate for the technology. It has released 3D films, published 3D Blu-rays and pushed 3D-compatible PS3 games. And, obviously, you could play 3D Blu-rays on PlayStation 3.

There's no technical reason why PlayStation 4 couldn't support 3D Blu-rays and the option may be patched in at a later date - but there's no mention of if or when this may occur.

At launch, the PS4 requires you to install its day-one patch to enable standard DVD and Blu-ray play.

Blu-ray formats BD-ROM and BD-R/RE plus DVD formats DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW+2, DVD+R/RW+2 will then be playable.

The formats not supported are Blu-ray 3D, BD-R/RE XL and BD-RE ver.1.0.

MP3 and audio CD options are not available at launch either, although support for these has been confirmed to arrive in a future patch.
