Star Wars Battlefront 2 multiplayer falls foul of GameSpy server shutdown

While many games will survive the upcoming shutdown of GameSpy's servers, one will not: Star Wars Battlefront 2.

In a note on the multiplayer shooter's Steam product page, publisher LucasArts said Star Wars Battlefront 2's online functionality will stop working on 31st May - the day GameSpy's servers are turned off.

"As of May 31, 2014, online functionality, including network multiplayer and wireless chat, will no longer be available for this title," reads the message.

"We regret any disappointment as a result of the shutdown of the services supporting these online features."

Star Wars Battlefront 2 was developed by Pandemic Studios, which closed its doors in 2009 after being bought by EA, and published by LucasArts, which was shut down in 2013 after being bought by Disney. The game was released on 1st November 2005.

It's clear that Disney, which continues to operate LucasArts as a licensing division, didn't feel keeping the nearly nine year-old title going was worth the cost.

The full list of titles powered by GameSpy servers runs into the hundreds. It's now out of date - many have already been moved to new hosting in preparation for GameSpy's shutdown - but it stands as testament to the wide-range of games the company once served.

GameSpy servers were used in everything from indie titles such as As Yet it Moves to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Rockstar blockbuster Red Dead Redemption.
