The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild mod aims to make Zelda the star

Publish date: 2022-06-23

After 30 years, Nintendo fans want Zelda to be the star of a Legend of Zelda game - so much so, a team of modders are trying to make this happen within Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

We've seen plenty of Breath of the Wild mods before - it's become a hobby for some, as the game's Wii U build has been hacked onto PC and repeatedly edited. But this one's a bit more involved - and there's a clear aim behind it.

The project is the work of more than 20 people, according to a Kotaku report. You can find various gameplay updates posted to YouTube.

Right now, Zelda is a playable character - she's been given a character model, can equip costumes which have also been hand-designed and has a new set of fan-recorded voices. It's been going down well online:

Here's how Zelda's new model sounds, as recorded by fans:

Here's Zelda's Gerudo costume, as an example of how each of Link's designs are being reworked by hand:

Finally, here's over an hour of gameplay showing off various costumes and areas of the game, explored as Zelda:

The closest we've ever gotten to (officially) playing as Zelda is in spin-off titles such as Hyrule Warriors and Super Smash Bros (or as a Phantom in Spirit Tracks). Isn't it time that changed, Nintendo?
