Uncensored Wolfenstein: The New Order on PC is geo-locked

Publish date: 2022-03-16

Bethesda has geo-locked the uncensored version of first-person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order on PC in order to prevent its sale in Germany.

This "international" (non-German language) edition includes Nazi-related symbols and content which are banned under German law. The sale, import, export and distribution of such material is a criminal offense with a penalty of up to three years in prison.

A special version of the game with the offending content removed will be made available within Germany, Austria and, via select distributors, elsewhere, Bethesda explained in a blog post.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is set during an alternate version of the 1960s when a fresh Nazi threat emerges. The German version of the game will be changed accordingly to remove all direct mention of World War 2 villains.

But - never fear - you still get the same amount of blood for your buck.

"Please note that the adaptation is in respect of Nazi content only, and although there are some legally required differences, the levels of violence and action remain the same as in the international version," Bethesda reassured.

"The story and contents of this game are not intended to and should not be construed in any way to condone, glorify or endorse the beliefs, ideologies, events, actions, persons or behavior of the Nazi regime or to trivialise its war crimes, genocide and other crimes against humanity."
