Undertale creator suggests it's going to be a while before we see more Deltarune
As ever, it's been a confusing time for Undertale fans. A few days ago, the official Undertale Twitter account released a file for something that seemed to be a survey, but turned out to be a demo for the follow-up game to Undertale. Named Deltarune, the game's first chapter kept players entertained for between two to three hours, and even came with its own original soundtrack.
Now many players have finished the demo, they have questions - and it seems Undertale creator Toby Fox is prepared to answer some of them. But if you thought the next chapter of Deltarune was coming anytime soon, I have some disappointing news for you.
In an extended FAQ on TwitLonger, Fox explained that Deltarune's first chapter "took a few years" to create - far longer than Undertale's demo. This is apparently due to the more complicated graphics, advanced battle system, multiple main characters and other issues such as personal burnout. He added he believes it's "actually impossible to make this game," explaining that he does not wish to spend longer than seven years on the project.
Despite the worrying statement, Fox also reassured fans he thinks Deltarune may be possible to complete as part of a team. "I may not be able to succeed because I have no experience successfully directing a team and I have no idea who I'm going to work with," Fox continued. "Since I haven't started assembling the team yet I have absolutely no estimation of its completion". Sounds like it could be a very long wait until we see the next Deltarune instalment - but the storyline, at least, has already been written.
As the project is still in the early stages, Fox only has some fledgling ideas for the game's full release. When the chapters are complete, they will all be released "at once" and players will be able to buy them "as one purchase". Beyond this, there are no plans for the cost, platform availability, or how long the game will be.
Although details on Deltarune's future are a little hazy, Fox did clarify some points about the current demo chapter. Apparently Deltarune is "not the world of Undertale" and exists separately from that storyline, with "different characters" and "different lives". Unlike Undertale, Deltarune will only have one ending - but players will still have a choice in how they choose to play (such as the pacifist route). Fox doesn't seem to want to label Deltarune as a sequel, but merely "a game you can play after you complete Undertale". Okay then.
So despite the excitement of the last few days, it seems Undertale fans will have remain content with the Deltarune demo for the foreseeable future. Let's hope it doesn't get lost in the sans of time.
